Getting rid of bed bugs is not an easy task. There are many bed bug treatments and also a wide varieties of products available in the market that claims to kill bed bugs quickly and completely, but before purchasing any product, try to do following steps first because this might save your money.

- Find the bed bugs. Looking in areas where people sleep; mattress seams, box springs seams, headboard, (any space where wood meets wood is an area that could house a bed bug.) under couch and in couches.
- Maintain Order and de-cluttering. You need to remove the soiled linen, bed sheets, pillows and any laundry lying around. Launder them in hot water as much as possible, dry them completely.
Soiled fabrics can harbor bugs and eggs; this heat will kill bed bugs and their eggs as well. Then put in air tight sealed plastic bags. - Anything that you do not need i.e.; winter clothes during the summer and vice versa, wash them and put into airtight bags or Rubbermaid containers.
- Papers need to be de-cluttered and visually inspected; large freezer bags are good for organizing loose papers and keeping them from harboring bugs.
- Remove all Cardboards since it is perfect breeding ground for bed bugs (Use large plastic bags to carry cardboard that you think is infested) to avoid spreading.
- Large stuffed toys need to be monitored; the easiest way to deal with them is to dry items in dryer for 40 minutes on hottest heat; this kills eggs and bugs that love hiding within. Cleaned or dried toys that are not currently being used need to be enclosed in a bag and put away until the ordeal is completely over, this prevents you from having to wash and rewash items that might harbor bugs, remember children’s rooms are the hardest to de-contaminate, bugs love cardboard, wood and fabric. All found in abundance in children’s rooms.
- Wood furniture needs to be thoroughly inspected. Bed bugs will be hiding in cracks and corners.

- Check other common places such as the wall carpeting and the ceiling-wall junctures.
- Vacuum everything; mattress seams, box spring seams, dresser drawers, baseboards, couch cracks and make sure you clean the hoses and filters do not forget to empty canister or toss bag in a sealed bag to the OUTSIDE GARBAGE. Rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle works good for cleaning tools, it kills bed bugs on contact. It will also kill bed bugs and their eggs from carpet, walls, mattresses and other surfaces. You must pay particular attention to tufts, seams, edges of mattresses, box springs and to the perimeter edge of wall-to-wall carpets. Remember bed bugs love hiding in areas as thick as a credit card.
- Use steam cleaner on couches, mattresses, curtains making sure temperatures reach 200°F. A dry steamer is necessary to help control the growth of mold and mildew.
- Visually inspecting everything that comes into your home is the only way to control what enters your home. People traveling internationally or connecting with international flights should inspect their luggage thoroughly! Wash items in as hot water as possible, dry and continue to dry for an additional 30 minutes to assure any hitchhikers will not be entering your domicile. Place suit case in garbage bag and seal off from air.
- Repair cracks, loose paint chips and fix loosened wall papers to avoid bed bug harborage sites.
- Pull all furniture away from the walls, electrical cords, and side tables. Bed bugs cannot jump or fly.
- Clean everything you can touch. A soapy bleach solution will be good to wipe down book shelves, dressers, doors and their jambs etc.
- Dust some food grade or industry grade Diatomaceous Earth (DE) along the baseboards, radiant heating, plumbing, around the foot of beds and couch. Do not dust the couch and the bed to avoid inhalation. Like any fine dust particulates you do not want to breathe them in. This do it yourself bed bug treatment will require a dust mask.

- Do not toss your furniture into the trash, this is one of the main ways bed bugs are transported; a seemingly clean item in the trash might look like a treasure to someone, unbeknownst to them they are bringing bed bugs home. If you toss something out, identify it as having bed bugs. Write on the bag or on the item so others can see it.
